7 The Candidature
The drive to Fairhaven Aged Care Center was pleasant as they passed by many farms on the crest of undulating green hills. It had a typical Australian countryside smellâgum trees, eucalyptus, and shrubs amongst the flora and tall grass. Cows in their abundance grazed on the fertile soil, and livestock roamed the corners of each farm. As the sunlight filtered through the sunroof of Harryâs Ute, it kicked in the endorphins that accentuated the scenic trip. They were both happy to be out of Hartley and doing something different together for a while.
âHarry, I forgot to mention something â¦â
âYeah, what was it?â Harry interrupted.
âI found something interesting while going through Paranormal Jackâs boxes in the basement.â It was an impromptu comment while she sipped on her traveling coffee mug.
He turned his head while driving with one hand at the wheel. âSure, what did you find? I bet itâs interesting, hey?â
âI think you will find this very perplexing.â She looked at Harry and smiled.
âCome on; tell me. Now you have me intrigued.â
âOkay. I discovered this in archive box number five. In 1936, a six-year-old boy went missing from the orphanage, and after months of searching, they found no trace of him.â Clarisse paused for a moment and took another sip of her coffee. âWant me to continue?â
âOh yeah, keep going. Itâs starting to sound interesting.â
âHis name was âLittle Charlie,â and after six months of no further investigation, a local detective by the name John Hickes was given a tip-off by a note that he received in the mail.â
âOh, a single note just magically appeared. I like those stories. And did they find the boy?â Harry was a little sarcastic and testing with Clarisse.
âYes, they dug a hole next to the pond behind the orphanage and found him in a shallow grave.â Clarisse was quiet as she gathered her thoughts. âI have pictures from the police file of Little Charlie before and after he died. Very gruesome, and it brings tears to your eyes.â
âYou looked at the photos of a dead little boy?â
âYes, Harry.â
âDo they know who did it?â
âWell, I have the police report on the investigation, and I was hoping you could help meââ
âHelp you go through it?â Harry interrupted.
âYes. You have a detailed mind for facts. You would be the best person to go through it.â Clarisse grinned at Harry, almost sarcastically.
âYou mean I am the perfect skeptic?â
âWell, something like that.â
âSure, Clarisse. I will go through the police report tonight. Who knows what I will find? Probably nothing.â
âNow youâre jumping to conclusions, Harry.â
âYeah, I guess I should not prejudice the findings.â Harry pulled down his window halfway to let the fresh country air into the car. With his hair blowing frantically in the wind, he looked at Clarisse with a churlish grin. âI might find a ghost did it.â
Clarisse smirked and placed the file on his lap. âThere you go. I will be interested in your point of view tonight.â
Harry nodded and kept on driving with one hand while the other held onto the file.
